Don & Ruth Willey's

Relax at a remote camp in the Dos Cabezas Mountains, bordering the Chiricahua Mountains, where historical trails for your horseback riding pleasure lead out directly from camp. You'll love Fort Bowie Horse Camp!
Are you looking for a horse camp where there are safe, spacious pens, full hook-ups where you're not crowded up against your neighbor, trails out the back gate and where the host will trailer you out to a number of bucket-list trail experiences? Then you've come to the right place! Fort Bowie Horse Camp and Fort Bowie Outpost lodge is located in southeastern Arizona, 16 miles from the town of Bowie and Interstate 10 (last three miles to the Camp are on an improved dirt road), five miles from famous Fort Bowie, whose soldiers engaged with legendary Apache Indians, Cochise, Geronimo and their tribes. https://www.nps.gov/fobo/index.htm

Besides horse camping, the ranch is open to RVers without horses. "It's so quiet!" is a remark most often heard, and "The night sky is gorgeous!"

In 2026, the Fort Bowie Outpost will have its grand opening. Your hosts, Ruth and Don Willey, will be pleased to offer five different bedrooms, handicap-friendly bathrooms with showers and a full kitchen, bar and gathering room for groups, all decorated in distinctive western style. Family reunions, weddings, birthday parties and meetings are welcome, as well as horse groups.

And there's more to enjoy. Forty minutes away is the town of Willcox, once the "Cattle Capital of the World," and former home of singing cowboy star, Rex Allen, who has his own museum which also includes the "Arizona Cowboy Museum." And there's a museum dedicated to "Friends of Marty Robbins, member of the Country Music Hall of Fame. You'll find the best Mexican restaurants, as well as Big Tex BBQ in the distinctive red train car by Historic Railroad Park. You can visit Anders Wine, The Trust Art Gallery & Wine Shop, Birds & Barrels, and the Willcox Historical Theater. Feel like playing a round of golf? There's the Twin Lakes Golf Course. In January, birders flock here for "Wings Over Willcox" at the Willcox Playa Wildlife Area. (Up to 20,000 migrating Sandhill Cranes arrive from October through February). For those who want an even wilder time, take a spin at Inde Motorsports where you can indulge your Formula One fantasies. https://www.thecrazytourist.com/15-best-things-to-do-in-willcox-az/
There are endless places to hike. Almost next door is Fort Bowie and its scenic three mile loop trail. There are also numerous trails in the Heart of Rocks Mountains and Chiricahua National Monument nearby.
Thirsty? Book a wine tour in Willcox Wine Country. The Willcox AVA (American Viticultural Area) comprises over 800 square miles; more than 80% of Arizona's grapes are cultivated here! Or, stop in at Apple Annie's Orchard where there's a feast of pies, cider, jams, syrups and more. Here you'll find gifts for all your family and friends.

Tombstone is a little over an hour's drive away, offering a terrific experience, stepping back in time, walking down its legendary streets, and stopping at the OK Corral where the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday had their deadly gunfight with the Clantons & McLaurys. Have lunch at Big Nose Kates and wash it down with a "Big Ass Beer." Want more? Half an hour away from Tombstone is the quaint former mining town of Bisbee, now home to hundreds of artists and a downtown filled with galleries, quaint shops, and wining and dining.

While there are trails out the gate from the camp (and sometimes cattle gathers with the neighbors), Don & Ruth are happy to trailer you out and guide you on a number of spectacular nearby trailheads:

* 3 miles to the Emigrant Trail that connects to
Chiricahua National Monument and Portal Pinery Canyon
* 5 miles to Fort Bowie
* 10 Miles to Indian Bread Rocks

* 40 Miles to Cochise Stronghold
A little further away, you'll find:

According to Ruth & Don: "We fell in love with the beauty of the Fort Bowie territory. The peace we feel here takes us back to slower times. We wanted to open our property to share with you some of the many trails and attractions this area has to offer."

What folks have to say about Fort Bowie Horse Camp
Cynthia
We've camped all over Arizona since 2020 and this is one of our very favorites! Our horses were happy, our dogs ecstatic and the trails where Don & Ruth guided us -- FANTASTIC! We'll be back every year. We truly loved the peaceful and laid-back atmosphere.

Don and Ruth are great on the trail. They’re very knowledgeable and made sure we had great rides!

Don rides almost every day of the week and will take you on trails right out the back gate, or hitch up the trailer and haul you to some of the most spectacular riding in the state. We stayed here for six weeks and by the time we left, felt like we were leaving family.
